Stress at Work Is Not a Mystery
Stress is work you are doing because of a role, a boss, or a target, read as something to resent, at close range. Distance and a new reading change more than a wellness app.
These notes are inspired by learning from UNITE, the Unified Theory of Emotions. I am not publishing the mechanism or the formula. That part is protected and is what I use in advisory work. You do not need the hidden arithmetic to test the advice. Sit with the situation. If it still looks true after you have pictured the back end, the rule is usable.
Stop treating stress as weather
People speak of stress as if it arrived from the sky. In a company it usually has a name: a person, a target, a system, a customer, a self-standard. You are spending hours and nerve because of that name. You are close to it all day. And you hold the spend as unfair, unwise, or never enough. That combination is loud. It is also specific enough to work on.
A wellness lecture that ignores those three facts is incense in a burning kitchen.
Two different offices, same hours
Ten hours for a boss whose cost is visible, whose aim you share, and who told you the quarter would hurt, can be tired and still clean. Ten hours for a boss who is protected, late to explain, and shifting the story, is the same clock with a different reading. The calendar is not the whole diagnosis. The column is.
This is why one team calls a crunch a campaign and another calls the same crunch abuse. Look at what they believe about who benefits and who hid the truth.
What actually moves
You often cannot cut the hours this month. You often cannot leave the site. The work already done does not shrink. The reading can move: from "they are using me" to "I chose this piece and I can see why." That move is not always available. If the facts are that they are using you, gratitude would be a lie. Then the honest move is distance, a smaller scope, or an exit.
Where the facts allow a new reading, it is the fastest change in the room. Where they do not, stop asking people to meditate their way around a broken promise.
Managers who create stress as a by-product
Unexplained urgency. Targets that move after they are hit. Credit taken upstairs, blame sent down. Silence after extra work. Those are not personality flaws only. They are how you force effort and then invite people to store it as grievance. You will call it "holding to account." They will call it Sunday night.
If you need a hard month, use the leadership tests: visible personal cost, a cause that is for them as well, early talk, a kept date. Stress will still exist. It will not automatically become hate.
A personal board
- Name Subject: the role, the person, or the target. One name.
- What work are you doing because of that name that you would not do if it vanished.
- Is that work stored as chosen or as imposed.
- How close are you to it each day. Can any of that closeness be cut this week (a channel muted, a desk moved, a report killed).
- If the reading cannot change because the facts are bad, write the exit or the shrink date. A date is a decision. A mood is not.
Startups manufacture stress by changing the story every Monday. Pick a story for ninety days. You will still be tired. You will be less poisoned.
Teams under rotating stories
Stress multiplies when the name of the enemy changes every week: last week cost, this week growth, next week quality. People still work. They cannot place the work in a stable column. That instability is not high standards. It is a leader who will not choose. Choose for ninety days. Put the other gods on a list dated after that.
Home and the leftover pile
Work stress leaks because proximity to yourself is total. You carry the reading home. A partner then meets a person who is already in a prosecution. If you cannot change the office this month, change one close channel: the phone that brings the office into the bed. That is a small distance move. It is more honest than a breathing app on top of a 1 a.m. mail culture.
UNITE is the background. I will not print how I score a Sunday night. If a firm wants a stress map that is not a survey cartoon, that is advisory work.

What comes home
You are never away from yourself. The office reading comes into the house. If you cannot change the firm this month, cut one channel: the phone that brings the office into the bed. That is a small distance move. It is more honest than a breathing app on top of a 1 a.m. mail culture.
Managers
Unexplained urgency and targets that move after they are hit will be called accountability upstairs and Sunday night downstairs. If you need a hard month, use visible personal cost, a shared aim, early talk, and a kept date. Tired can stay clean. Poisoned cannot.
Freeze one story for ninety days. You will still be tired. You will be less poisoned. Put the other aims on a dated list so nobody has to guess which god is in charge this afternoon.
If the facts are that the firm is using you, do not perform gratitude. Write a shrink date or an exit date. A date is a decision. A mood is not.
